Trailulive’s New Collaborator, Scott Saifer: Physical Trainer Extraordinaire

Background

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area with it’s general appreciation of all things “healthy”, combined with the inclusive love of the outdoors expressed by his parents, Scott found himself to be at home wherever the outdoors led him.

Yearly visits to Yosemite kindled his admiration for mountains and open spaces, and his desire to continually experience the breathe of wilderness, the stillness, the physical challenges, the rapture of what Mother Nature had to offer a young man such as himself.

Out of these early experiences, an interest in gaining more intellectual knowledge about the body and its internal and outer workings was born.

Scott attended UC Berkeley, Majoring in Biophysics and continued on to grad school at Cal State Hayward where he studied Exercise Physiology, Sport Psychology, Exercise Nutrition, Sport Medicine, and Biomechanics.

During his teens and early twenties, Scott’s continued passion for cycling and the freedom of the open road led him on unsupported tours to Yosemite, the Northern California Coast, Highway One from San Francisco to L.A. and San Diego, and even one 39-day trip from Berkeley, California to Bar Harbor, Maine. His tours usually included several less experienced cyclo-tourists so he began to develop his group-leadership abilities.

Throughout the 1990s, Scott raced road and mountain bike races, completing more than 300 races with roughly a dozen victories.

Since roughly 2000, his passion for the outdoors and athletics has seen him headed in a new direction. Some friends introduced him to week-long back-packing tours of the high Sierra, while other friends introduced him to out-door rock climbing. Sensing that these were going to be important activities for the rest of his life, he took a 3-week backpacking and rock climbing course at the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming (www.nols.edu) where he gained more leadership skills* in mountaineering, backpacking, hiking, and climbing. Scott began yearly excursions to the Sierras, backpacking and snow camping, sometimes in adults-only groups but usually with kids as well. (Kids love sleeping in snow caves!)

Scott has been Head Coach for more than 10 Team in Training programs, preparing close to 1000 athletes for events such as ‘Death Ride (road bikes)’, ‘24 hour MOAB (MTB)’, Yellowstone Rendezvous (XC Ski), and Tour of Anchorage (XC ski) as well as numerous ‘century’ bike rides.
