Sharing the Love of Backpacking with Younger Beings

Backpacking with the young can be an amazing experience or an experience not to be remembered. "I'm tired!" "I don't want to walk anymore!" "This backpack is too heavy, you carry it!" "I want to go home!"
"I'm scared..." Many phrases that could be said that possibly scare the living shit out of parents who would like to share the experience but opt not to out of fear.
Backpacking with children truly doesn't have to be a nightmare waiting to happen, but an easeful, safe, gradual growth that allows space, comfort, positive memories and connections to be made for all.
Matching the hike with your children's abilities, starting off with a short trip with a nice reward in the beginning, middle and end is always a good start (no need to promise the world, remember to be rational and reasonable parents/adults). No need to buy expensive gear, nevertheless, gear should be COMFORTABLE, EASY TO USE, NOT TOO HEAVY.
Sleeping bags
pads
tents
footwear, sturdy shoes or boots
weight of pack should be no more that 20% of your child's weight, just to name a few
Many sites to find more information, but Trailulive always wants to give you a small taste of something to get you hungry to find out more.
Remember, backpack as a team. Support your team member, young or older. Listen and be mindful. May your backpacking with youth begin with excitement and sweetness.
